Description

A trip to the seaside, what’s not to like. The ride leaves Highland Moors down through Builth Wells and along the A438, after leaving town there’ll be a checkpoint – just to help with the navigation. The route heads west, crossing the edge of the Cambrian Mountains, with spectacular views. Rounding and dropping down past Black Mountain and onto Llandovery for an early lunch at Llandovery.

Following a warm-up, the route starts a series of climbs and descents on its way to New Quay for an afternoon stop and (maybe) some fish & chips followed by an ice cream. Leaving New Quay climbing up and then fairly soon finding minor roads and lanes on your way to Ffair-Rhos, the lane soon narrows and a bit latter the asphalt stops and the fun begins. After a couple of small climbs the route eventually levels-out, the sweeping Cambrian mountain views give way to the Claerwen reservoir for the rest of the rough stuff. Once you reach the dam, the tarmac resumes for the rest of route. You’ll cross the Garreg Ddu dam and pass adjacent to Caban Coch reservoir and dam. Depending on your progress, you might be in time for an ‘off-piste’ pit stop at the Elan Visitor Centre – otherwise its through Rhayader and after a couple more rises – back to arriveé, and prepare for the brunch social the following morning.
